Joseph Haydn’s Missa in Tempore Belli ("Mass in Time of War")

Composed in 1796 during a period of intense political unrest, Haydn’s Missa in Tempore Belli is a stirring reflection on the anxiety of war and an enduring desire for peace. The work’s nickname, Paukenmesse (Timpani Mass), comes from its dramatic use of timpani, which adds wonderful emotional intensity of the piece. With stunning choral writing, moving solo passages, and Haydn’s unmistakable style, this Mass takes you on a journey from fear to hope, beautifully encapsulating tension while conveying a clear desire for peace.
