About Us

When University Concert Hall (UCH) opened its doors nearly thirty years ago, it was Ireland’s first purpose built concert hall, with variable acoustics to allow its sound design to be tailored to all genres of performance. The 1,038 seat auditorium which is situated on the University of Limerick campus was formally launched on September 18th, 1993, by the then Taoiseach, Mr Albert Reynolds T.D. and U.S. Ambassador, Mrs Jean Kennedy Smith.

Over the years the venue has hosted numerous classical recitals, stand-up comedians, pantomimes and singer songwriters, adding breadth and depth to the cultural life of the Mid-West region. UCH’s reputation as a venue has helped to attract some of the biggest names in the performing arts including comedians Jimmy Carr, Dara O’Briain and Billy Connolly, singer-songwriters Van Morrison, Imelda May, Albert Hammond and legendary Irish musician Christy Moore.  The Irish Chamber Orchestra season and performances by the RTÉ National Symphony and Concert Orchestras are a staple of the venue’s annual itinerary.  UCH has also hosted many TV and Radio Broadcasts including Gradam Ceoil, TG4 Awards, The Late Late Show and Eurosong.

UCH Supports Upcoming Irish Artists

In addition to established performers, UCH supports upcoming Irish artists through initiatives such as  the annual Rising Stars concert that brings young Irish classical artists to the UCH stage, showcasing their considerable talents. UCH also works with the wider community of Limerick to spark or grow interest in the arts through workshops and concerts.

In 2015 UCH was awarded the Irish Music Rights Organisations Live Performance Venue of the Year for 2014 in Munster for its contribution to the Arts and Entertainment Industry and the Limerick Chamber Award in the Best Sport, Art, Culture category.

UCH is also home to Ireland’s only Compton organ in working condition. This unique instrument underwent a major refurbishment and can now be experienced through solo performances and film accompaniment at UCH.

As well as being an entertainment venue, UCH plays a significant role in attracting conference business to Limerick. The venue has hosted many business events and conferences including the Irish League of Credit Unions, Operation Smile and the 10th International Alexander Technique Congress.

The University of Limerick campus, UCH’s home, is a hub of cultural activity. It is also home to the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Irish World Academy of Music & Dance, the Association of Irish Choirs, The Bourne Vincent Gallery, Desmond Kinney Mosaics and an extensive Art collection.

Please note that the University of Limerick is a smoke and vape free campus.
