Academy Artists Series – Bill Whelan


This event takes place in the Irish World Academy Building


As part of the Academy Artist Series, please join us for an intimate evening with one of Ireland’s most distinguished composers, whose work for theatre, film, and orchestra has resonated with audiences around the world. Bill Whelan’s GRAMMY Award-winning score for Riverdance continues to captivate global audiences, marking three decades of performance. His orchestral works include The Seville Suite, The Connemara Suite, and Linen & Lace, composed for Sir James Galway. His recent work Stolen Hearts (2024), for traditional musicians and symphony orchestra, premiered at the National Concert Hall with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. His work extends to collaborations with leading literary figures including Paul Muldoon, Derek Mahon, Frank McGuinness, and Paul Durcan, as well as acclaimed films such as Dancing at Lughnasa, Some Mother’s Son, and Lamb. A Fellow of the Royal College of Music, a member of Aosdána, and an Honorary Freeman of the City of Limerick, Bill Whelan remains a central figure in Ireland’s cultural life. 

Reservations
A limited number of seats are available and may be reserved with a donation of €125 to the UL Foundation, with a limited number of seats reserved for students and community partners. 
The artist has kindly waived his fee so that all proceeds from this event can go to the Academy Stepping Stones scholarships. These scholarships support students from culturally-rich but economically challenged contexts to pursue postgraduate study at the Irish World Academy.
