The University of Limerick Orchestra was founded in 1992 by cellist Ann Ross as an initiative of the then President of UL Ed Walsh. The Orchestra is comprised of students and staff of the University, Mary Immaculate College, TUS Mid-West, Limerick School of Music, and members of the wider Mid-West musical community. Concert pianist Clíodna Shanahan is much in demand internationally as a soloist, chamber and
orchestral musician. She performs regularly with the London Sinfonietta, London Philharmonic
Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Her great
passion for rare and contemporary music has led to many composer-collaborations, world premières
and first recordings. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has recorded for SOMM, Lyrita, and
Nonesuch.
Her unique musicianship cannot be confined to a single artform and is regularly heard beyond the
concert platform and recording studio. She particularly enjoys collaborating with dancers and
choreographers, including numerous projects with Rambert, the Royal Ballet, and English National
Ballet.
Her formal musical training began at the School of Music in her native Limerick, followed by the
Yehudi Menuhin School and Royal College of Music, London.
In addition to her performing career, Clíodna is committed to music education. She holds the
position of Lecturer in Piano at the University of Southampton and is regularly involved in
educational and outreach programmes across the wider community.
