Written in 1939,Hartmann’sConcerto Funebre is a powerful and extraordinary work, which reacts to the tragic events of war – the occupation of Czechoslovakia. It holds conflicting messages of hope, desperation, and fear for what lies ahead. Thomas Zehetmair’s virtuosic solo is a mournful commentary as well as a prophetic cry.
