IRISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA MOZART & HARTMANN
Mozart Symphony No. 38 KV 504 Prague
Hartmann Violin Concerto, Op.19 (Funereal Concerto)
Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K.550
Irish Chamber Orchestra performs two of Mozart’s great symphonies, his melancholic Symphony No. 40, adored by audiences, reflects Mozart’s struggles. It’s gorgeous, dreamy second movement, sees the strings woven closely together – as in the love duets of Italian operas of the time. The city of Prague was the catalyst for Mozart’s bright and boisterous Symphony No. 30 a deeply expressive, boundary-pushing drama, brimming with energy. Written in 1939, Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre is a powerful and extraordinary work, which reacts to the tragic events of war – the occupation of Czechoslovakia. It holds conflicting messages of hope, desperation, and fear for what lies ahead. Thomas Zehetmair’s virtuosic solo is a mournful commentary as well as a prophetic cry.
