Awakening, Limerick Concert Series is delighted to welcome two greats to the University Concert Hall stage – acclaimed pianist Hugh Tinney, in concert with renowned cellist, Christopher Marwood. This online stream will be recorded live from the UCH stage and be available to view from Sunday 9th of May at 3pm – Sunday 16th May.
Born in Dublin Hugh Tinney first came to international recognition by winning first prize at both the 1983 Pozzoli and 1984 Paloma O’Shea piano competitions in Italy and Spain. Since then he has performed in more than thirty-five countries throughout Europe, the US, Latin America and the Far East. He has enjoyed a busy career in Great Britain, performing with many major orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, City of Birmingham, Royal Scottish and BBC National of Wales. Hugh has made a major contribution to Irish concert life for over thirty years, including multiple solo recital series and frequent concerto appearances with the RTE National Symphony and RTE Concert Orchestras well as the Irish Chamber Orchestra. In 2018, in recognition of his 60th Birthday Hugh fulfilled some key celebratory engagements including a solo recital for Great Music in Irish Houses, a 12 stop recital tour of the country and a performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra to a sold out National Concert Hall in Dublin.
Joining Hugh on stage will be cellist Christopher Marwood.
As cellist of the Vanbrugh Quartet for 32 years, Christopher Marwood enjoyed a busy career performing throughout Ireland and touring worldwide. The Quartet released over thirty CDs and built up a considerable repertoire including at least sixty Irish works, many of them commissions or premieres. The Quartet’s contribution to music in Ireland was formally recognized in 2016 when they were presented with the National Concert Hall’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Christopher co-founded the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in 1996 and remains director of the Festival’s masterclass programme. His recent CD of works by Boris Tchaikovsky was nominated for the 2019 International Classical Music Awards
Together these two greats will perform a beautiful programme including Debussy and Prokofiev’s Sontata’s for Cello and Piano.
